Retains foliage through winter. May need protection below 25°F.
Grow in full sun for best growth; tolerates light part shade but performs best with 6+ hours of direct sun daily. In NE Florida, choose a warm, frost-sheltered microclimate — south- or southeast-facing exposure near a structure helps protect from rare hard freezes.
Water regularly while establishing (first 1–2 years), then reduce to moderate irrigation; allow soil to dry somewhat between waterings. Spindle palm is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from consistent moisture during NE Florida's dry season.
Plant in sandy, well-drained soil; poor drainage causes root rot. Fertilize three times yearly (spring, summer, fall) with a granular palm fertilizer high in potassium and magnesium to prevent common deficiencies in Florida's sandy soils.
