Beaucarnea recurvata
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) is a striking succulent tree native to the semi-arid regions of eastern Mexico, recognized by its swollen, bottle-shaped base that stores water and its fountain of long, thin, arching leaves cascading from the top. Despite its common name, it is not a true palm but a member of the agave family (Asparagaceae). It is a popular container and landscape specimen in warm, dry climates for its dramatic sculptural form and minimal water needs. Starting at $16.95.

Bloom season. Handles summer heat well once established.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter. May need protection below 25°F.
Ponytail Palm prefers full sun for best growth and form; it tolerates part shade but grows even more slowly. In NE Florida, plant in a sunny, well-drained spot or keep in a container that can be moved inside on freezing nights.
Extremely drought-tolerant — the swollen base stores water for extended dry periods. Water deeply but infrequently (every 2–3 weeks during summer, monthly or less in winter). Overwatering is the most common cause of decline; never allow water to pool at the base.
Plant in fast-draining sandy or sandy-loam soil; NE Florida's native sandy soils are ideal. Do not amend with moisture-retaining materials. Fertilize lightly once in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer; excess fertility is not needed and can harm the plant.
