Euphorbia
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 15.
Euphorbia is a vast genus of ornamental plants ranging from low succulents to large cactus-like shrubs, all producing a caustic milky latex sap. In NE Florida, they perform best in containers or raised beds with sharply draining sandy soil and minimal irrigation, as their main challenge in this climate is surviving the humid, wet summer season. Starting at $6.95.
Good planting window.
Can be planted with extra attention to watering.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Euphorbias thrive in full sun; most ornamental varieties tolerate partial shade but produce more compact, vigorous growth in bright light. In NE Florida, full sun positions in sandy, fast-draining soil are ideal. Avoid deep shade, which promotes weak, leggy stems.
Euphorbias are drought-tolerant succulents and semi-succulents that are easily overwatered in Florida's humid, rainy climate. Water sparingly — allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Container growing is often preferable in NE Florida for better moisture control; reduce irrigation to near-zero during the summer rainy season.
Use sharply draining sandy or cactus-mix soil with low organic content. In NE Florida's heavy summer rains, raised beds or containers prevent the waterlogging that kills most Euphorbia. Fertilize lightly with a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring only. Always handle with gloves — the milky latex sap is caustic and irritating to skin and eyes.
