Senecio rowleyanus
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
String of Pearls (Curio rowleyanus) is a South African trailing succulent with distinctive spherical, bead-like leaves that store water. Its long, delicate stems spill gracefully from hanging baskets, and mature plants produce small white, cinnamon-scented flowers. Starting at $7.95.
Bloom season. Good planting window.
Bloom season. Handles summer heat well once established.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter.
String of pearls thrives in bright, indirect light — a shaded lanai or spot with morning sun and filtered afternoon light is ideal in NE Florida. Direct Florida afternoon sun scorches the delicate beads; too little light causes etiolation and poor bead formation.
Water sparingly — allow soil to dry completely between waterings (every 2–3 weeks in summer, less in winter). Overwatering is the most common cause of failure; shriveled beads indicate underwatering, mushy stems indicate root rot from excess moisture. NE Florida's humidity necessitates very porous, fast-draining soil.
Use a gritty cactus or succulent mix with excellent drainage; never use standard potting soil, which retains too much moisture. Feed once in spring with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer (quarter to half strength). Grow in a container with drainage holes and bring indoors if temperatures drop below 40°F.
