Origanum
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Oregano (Origanum spp.) is a drought-tolerant, sun-loving perennial herb that grows reliably year-round in NE Florida. Many species and cultivars thrive here, including common oregano (O. vulgare), Greek oregano, and the highly aromatic Syrian oregano (O. syriacum/za'atar), all prized for culinary use and small pollinator-friendly summer blooms. Starting at $3.50.

Retains foliage through winter. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Oregano requires full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily — for the best flavor and compact growth. In NE Florida's humid summers, good air circulation around plants helps prevent fungal issues.
Water deeply but infrequently; oregano is drought-tolerant once established and is very susceptible to root rot in waterlogged conditions. NE Florida's sandy soils drain well naturally — water only when the top inch of soil is dry.
Plant in well-drained, lean soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0; amend heavy clay with sand or compost but avoid over-enriching, as excessive fertility reduces essential oil concentration and flavor. A light application of balanced fertilizer in spring is sufficient.

Shares 6 of the same needs: full sun, low water, sandy, deer resistance, zone 9a hardiness, and pollinator-friendly.
