Diospyros kaki
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki) is a deciduous fruit tree prized for its large, brilliant orange fruits that ripen in autumn, often while the tree is bare of leaves for a spectacular ornamental display. It is generally adapted to NE Florida zone 9b using low-chill cultivars — select non-astringent varieties such as 'Fuyu' or low-chill types recommended for North Florida. The tree is also highly ornamental as a landscape specimen with golden fall color. Starting at $195.00.
Bloom season. New foliage emerges. Good planting window.
Active growing season.
Foliage may begin to change or drop.
Dormant — drops foliage. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Plant in full sun for best fruit production and ornamental display. Can tolerate light partial shade but fruit set and fall color will be reduced. Choose a well-drained, open site.
Water regularly during establishment and during extended drought, particularly in summer. Once established, Japanese persimmon is moderately drought-tolerant. Consistent moisture during fruit development improves fruit size and quality.
Adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soils including Florida's sandy soils; prefers slightly acid to neutral pH. Apply a balanced fruit-tree fertilizer in late winter and early summer. Grafted trees are preferred — graft onto Diospyros virginiana rootstock, which is adaptable and widely available in the Southeast.
