Malus pumila
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Apple (Malus domestica) is a deciduous fruit tree with white spring blossoms and familiar round fruits in red, yellow, or green. In NE Florida zone 9b, only low-chill cultivars such as 'Anna', 'Dorsett Golden', and 'TropicSweet' are viable — standard cultivars fail to break dormancy without sufficient winter chill hours. Plant two compatible low-chill varieties for cross-pollination and fruit set. Starting at $150.00.
Bloom season. New foliage emerges. Good planting window.
Active growing season.
Foliage may begin to change or drop.
Dormant — drops foliage. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Apple trees require full sun (8+ hours) for best fruit production. In NE Florida, choose a site with maximum sun exposure and good air circulation to reduce fungal disease pressure in the humid climate.
Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish deep roots; mature trees tolerate moderate drought but produce better fruit with consistent moisture. In NE Florida's rainy summers, ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot — raised beds or mounded planting help in flat sandy sites.
Plant in well-drained sandy or loamy soil at neutral to slightly acidic pH. In NE Florida, only low-chill cultivars ('Anna', 'Dorsett Golden', 'TropicSweet') are viable — standard cultivars will not fruit reliably due to insufficient chill hours. Apply a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer with micronutrients in late winter; most cultivars require a cross-pollinator.
