Onions need full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In NE Florida, plant in an open, sunny bed from September through December for bulb development during the short-day winter season.
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; onions have shallow roots that dry out quickly in NE Florida's sandy soils. Water about 1 inch per week and use mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Grow in well-drained soil rich in organic matter with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Amend sandy beds with compost before planting. Side-dress with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer 3–4 weeks after planting to support bulb development.
