Illicium floridanum
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 15.
White Florida Anise ('Alba') is a white-flowered cultivar of the native Florida anise, an aromatic evergreen shrub with glossy, leathery foliage that releases a strong anise fragrance when crushed. It tolerates deep shade and moist, acidic soils, making it an excellent native screen or understory shrub for NE Florida landscapes. Starting at $29.95.
Florida anise grows in partial to full shade in NE Florida and is one of the few large shrubs that performs well in deep shade. Avoid full sun, which causes leaf scorch and reduced vigor.
Once established, Florida anise 'Alba' is drought-tolerant and needs irrigation only during prolonged dry spells. Maintain consistently moist, rich soil during the establishment year; avoid waterlogging.
Plant in moist, acidic, organically rich loam — pair with azaleas and camellias in NE Florida landscapes. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid-forming fertilizer (e.g., azalea/camellia blend); prune once per year to maintain shape.
