Cestrum nocturnum
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 15.
Night-Blooming Jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum) is a fast-growing tropical evergreen shrub prized for its intensely fragrant, small tubular greenish-white flowers that open at night. In NE Florida (zone 9b) it is root-hardy but may die back in hard freezes, re-sprouting vigorously in spring. Note: UF/IFAS classifies it as high invasion risk — remove berries promptly to prevent spread. Starting at $14.95.
Plant Night-Blooming Jasmine in full sun to part shade; full sun produces the heaviest bloom. In NE Florida, a south-facing, wind-sheltered location helps protect against occasional winter freezes that may kill top growth.
Water regularly during establishment, then reduce to moderate irrigation once established; this shrub is moderately drought tolerant but blooms best with consistent moisture. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Grows in most well-drained soils, including NE Florida's sandy loams. Fertilize three times per year (spring, summer, early fall) with a balanced granular fertilizer to sustain vigorous growth and repeat bloom. Hard prune in spring if winter dieback occurs. Note: UF/IFAS rates this species as high invasion risk — remove berries before they ripen to limit spread.
