Cryptanthus bivittatus
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
A low-growing terrestrial bromeliad from Brazil forming flat, star-shaped rosettes of lance-shaped, serrated leaves in shades of bright pink, red, and green with ivory or silver striping. Unlike most bromeliads, it grows without a central water cup and is prized primarily for its colorful, patterned foliage. Starting at $9.95.
Cryptanthus thrives in bright indirect light to partial shade; direct Florida sun will bleach and damage the colorful foliage. A shaded patio, north-facing window, or spot beneath a tree canopy in NE Florida provides ideal conditions — some morning sun can enhance leaf coloration without scorching.
Unlike tank bromeliads, Cryptanthus must be watered at the soil level. Keep the potting mix consistently moist but not soggy, watering when the top 2 inches begin to dry. High humidity is essential in NE Florida — mist regularly or group plants together; avoid letting the root zone dry out completely.
Use a well-draining, humus-rich, acidic bromeliad or orchid mix (pH 5–6) with added perlite and orchid bark. Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength applied to the soil, not the foliage. Bring containers indoors during any frost threat, as this species is not cold hardy in zone 9b.
Cryptanthus is a bromeliad for Zone 9b coastal Florida gardens, reaching 6-12 inches × 6-24 inches.
