Illicium floridanum
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
An evergreen native shrub of the southeastern U.S. with dense, glossy leathery foliage that releases a strong licorice aroma when crushed. Bears showy maroon-red star-shaped flowers with multiple strap-like petals in spring, followed by distinctive star-shaped seed pods. Starting at $24.95.
Best in partial to full shade; leaves may scorch with prolonged direct afternoon sun. Ideal for NE Florida's shady understory spots beneath live oaks or along north-facing walls where it receives morning light and afternoon protection.
Prefers consistently moist soil; not drought tolerant. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Tolerates wet, poorly drained sites making it useful in low-lying shady areas of the NE Florida landscape.
Thrives in rich, moist, organic soil; tolerates heavy clay or wet conditions. Amend NE Florida's sandy soil with compost before planting. Apply a slow-release balanced fertilizer in spring to support lush foliage growth.
