Thymus vulgaris
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Common thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a low-growing Mediterranean perennial herb with tiny aromatic leaves and small pink to lavender spring flowers. In NE Florida, it performs best as a cool-season herb planted in fall or early spring, grown in well-drained soil with full sun and minimal irrigation. Starting at $2.50.
Bloom season. Good planting window.
Bloom season. Handles summer heat well once established.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Plant in full sun (6–8 hours daily); thyme requires maximum sun exposure for the oils that produce its aromatic flavor and to avoid fungal issues in Florida's humid climate.
Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry; thyme is highly drought tolerant and will rot quickly in constantly moist or poorly drained conditions — excellent drainage is essential in NE Florida.
Prefers lean, well-drained sandy or loamy soil with a pH of 6.0–8.0; minimal fertilization is needed — light compost at planting is sufficient, as over-feeding reduces the intensity of the herb's flavor.
