Vachellia farnesiana
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Sweet Acacia (Vachellia farnesiana) is a thorny semi-evergreen tree native to tropical America, bearing extremely fragrant golden-yellow puffball flowers in spring. It is drought-tolerant and widely used in xeriscape landscapes. Starting at $19.95.
Sweet Acacia demands full sun and will not perform well under the shade of larger trees. In NE Florida, site in an open, unobstructed location — full sun maximizes the production of its intensely fragrant golden flowers in winter and spring.
Highly drought tolerant once established; water only once or twice a month during the growing season. In NE Florida, supplemental irrigation is rarely needed after the first year except during prolonged drought. Overwatering or poor drainage will harm the tree.
Tolerates sandy, loamy, or even clay soils as long as drainage is excellent. No special fertilizer program is needed; Sweet Acacia grows well in nutrient-poor soils. Caution: sharp thorns make maintenance pruning hazardous — prune when young to establish clearance.
