Christmas Jewel Holly (Ilex × 'HL10-90') is a compact, densely pyramidal evergreen holly reaching 6–10 ft., with dark glossy foliage and an exceptionally heavy crop of apple-red berries that persist from late fall through early summer. It is heat- and drought-tolerant once established, making it an excellent specimen, hedge, or foundation plant for NE Florida zone 9b landscapes. Starting at $125.00.
Bloom season. Good planting window.
Handles summer heat well once established.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Plant in full sun for best berry production and dense form; tolerates part sun. In NE Florida, full sun also reduces fungal foliar disease by improving air movement and drying foliage faster.
Drought-tolerant once established. Water deeply and infrequently during establishment; mature plants rarely need supplemental irrigation in NE Florida. Do not allow soil to remain waterlogged.
Prefers slightly acidic, well-drained sandy or loam soil (pH 4.5–6.0). Apply a slow-release azalea/holly fertilizer in spring. Mulch to maintain soil moisture and acidity.
