Hypericum hypericoides
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 15.
St. Andrew's Cross (Hypericum hypericoides) is a compact Florida-native evergreen shrub bearing distinctive four-petaled yellow flowers whose sepals form a characteristic X shape throughout summer and into fall. Excellent for dry, sandy native gardens in NE Florida, it is drought-tolerant, pollinator-attractive, and adaptable to a wide range of soils in USDA zones 5b–10a. Starting at $14.95.
Grow in full sun to partial shade; full sun maximizes bloom. This Florida native tolerates NE Florida's heat and humidity well and requires no special protection — plant in a spot with 4–6+ hours of direct sun for best flowering performance.
Drought-tolerant once established in NE Florida's sandy soils; water regularly only during the first growing season. Thereafter, relies on rainfall with minimal supplemental irrigation. Avoid constantly wet or poorly drained sites, which promote root rot.
Adaptable to sandy, loamy, or clay soils as long as drainage is adequate; tolerates both dry and occasionally moist conditions. Light application of a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring is sufficient — this native thrives in low-nutrient conditions typical of NE Florida's sandy soils.
