Tecoma capensis
Fresh this week. Last restocked May 21.
A fast-growing South African native evergreen shrub bearing clusters of two-inch trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of orange, red, or yellow that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. It tolerates heat, drought, salt, and wind and can be used as a groundcover, hedge, or espalier. Starting at $24.95.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade; full sun produces the most prolific bloom. In NE Florida, it performs excellently in open, sunny exposures and tolerates reflected heat from walls and pavement.
Low to moderate water needs once established; water regularly during the establishment period (first 1-2 seasons), then reduce to occasional deep irrigation during dry spells. Cape Honeysuckle is drought-tolerant and performs well in NE Florida's sandy soils with minimal supplemental irrigation.
Adaptable to a wide range of soils including NE Florida's sandy conditions; plant with minimal amendment and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) once in early spring. Prune hard in late winter or early spring to maintain size and stimulate flowering; this fast grower can become invasive in south Florida so monitor spread.
