Salvia yangii
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Russian sage (Salvia yangii, formerly Perovskia atriplicifolia) is a woody-based perennial subshrub from Central Asia, prized for its silver aromatic stems and long panicles of lavender-blue flowers in summer through fall. In NE Florida zone 9b it is marginal — high summer humidity can shorten its lifespan — so provide the hottest, driest, best-drained site possible for best results. Starting at $16.95.
New foliage emerges. Good planting window.
Bloom season. Handles summer heat well once established.
Bloom season. Foliage may begin to change or drop. Ideal planting window.
Dormant — drops foliage.
Requires full sun all day; in NE Florida's summer heat, excellent drainage is essential to prevent crown rot. Plants may be short-lived in zone 9b due to high humidity — choose the most exposed, airy site available.
Water sparingly; Russian sage is highly drought tolerant and will decline in wet or poorly drained soils. In NE Florida's rainy summers, raised beds or mounded soil improve drainage and extend plant life.
Plant in lean, sharply drained sandy or loam soil — do not amend with organic matter or fertilize heavily, as rich soils cause floppy growth. Alkaline to neutral pH preferred; avoid wet clay.
