Alocasia
Fresh this week. Last restocked Apr 17.
Alocasia hybrids are bold tropical perennials grown for their dramatic, oversized arrow- or shield-shaped leaves in colors from deep green to nearly black, often with contrasting veins or metallic sheens. In Northeast Florida they are root-hardy in-ground, dying back after frost and re-sprouting vigorously each spring, and make stunning accent plants for shaded garden beds and large containers. Starting at $12.95.
Bloom season. Good planting window.
Bloom season. Higher water demand in summer heat. Can be planted with extra attention to watering.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Alocasia performs best in bright indirect light or dappled shade; avoid direct afternoon sun in Northeast Florida, which scorches the large leaves. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal for outdoor beds.
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; Alocasia requires frequent watering in Florida's sandy soils, especially during the hot, dry spring. Reduce watering slightly during cooler winter months when growth slows.
Plant in rich, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil amended with compost. Feed with a balanced slow-release fertilizer monthly during the growing season (spring through fall) to support the large leaf canopy.
