Bananas (Musa spp.) are vigorous tropical herbaceous plants that grow 6–20 ft tall depending on cultivar, thriving in NE Florida's zone 9b heat and humidity. They produce bold paddle-shaped foliage and, in frost-free years, hanging clusters of edible fruit from a clumping rhizome that re-sprouts even after light freezes. Starting at $12.95.

Retains foliage through winter.
Plant bananas in full sun for best growth and fruiting; they tolerate part shade but produce fewer and smaller bunches. In NE Florida, a south-facing, wind-protected site maximizes the short fruiting window.
Bananas are thirsty plants — water deeply 1–2 times per week and never let the root zone dry out completely. In NE Florida's sandy soils, add a thick organic mulch ring (4–6 in.) to retain moisture and protect the shallow rhizome.
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil amended with compost. Fertilize with a high-potassium balanced fertilizer (e.g., 6-2-12) every 2 months during the growing season; potassium is key to fruit quality in Florida bananas. Avoid heavy clay.
