Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia macrophylla) is a vigorous deciduous vine native to the Appalachian region, grown for its large, heart-shaped leaves that create dense shade and its unusual curved, pipe-shaped yellowish-green flowers. Dutchman's Pipe grows in full sun to partial shade, performing best with morning sun and afternoon shade protection in NE Florida's intense heat. Note: this Appalachian native is rated zones 4–8 and is not reliably suited to zone 9b's heat and humidity — consider the native Florida Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia tomentosa or A. serpentaria) as a zone-appropriate alternative for pipevine swallowtail habitat.
Requires consistently moist, never drying soil — it is intolerant of drought. In NE Florida's sandy soils, regular deep watering and thick organic mulch are essential; however, zone 9b's summer heat will significantly stress this cool-climate species.
Plant in rich, moist, organic loam with excellent drainage; amend sandy Florida soils with generous compost. Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Provide a sturdy trellis or fence, as this vine grows 4–6 feet per season when established.
