Lavandula
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Lavender (Lavandula spp.) is a fragrant, drought-tolerant Mediterranean subshrub with silvery foliage and aromatic flower spikes that attract bees and butterflies. English lavender (L. angustifolia) struggles in NE Florida's heat and humidity; heat-tolerant species such as French lavender (L. dentata), Sweet lavender (L. heterophylla), or the hybrid 'Phenomenal' perform best in zone 9b. Starting at $2.50.
Bloom season. Good planting window.
Bloom season. Handles summer heat well once established.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter.
Plant in full sun; a little afternoon shade in summer helps in NE Florida's intense heat. Lavender requires at least 6 hours of direct sun for best fragrance and bloom.
Water deeply but infrequently; allow soil to dry between waterings. Lavender does not tolerate wet feet — excess moisture and high humidity cause root and stem rot. Avoid wetting foliage and keep mulch away from the crown.
Requires sharply drained, lean sandy soil with pH above 6.0. In NE Florida's sandy soils lavender can thrive if drainage is excellent. Fertilize very lightly or not at all; rich soils reduce fragrance and promote disease. In zone 9b, choose heat- and humidity-tolerant species such as Lavandula dentata, L. heterophylla, or the hybrid 'Phenomenal' rather than English lavender.
