Loropetalum (Loropetalum chinense) is an evergreen shrub native to China and Japan, prized for its striking burgundy-purple foliage and clusters of fringe-like pink or white flowers in late winter to spring. It grows in a mounding or arching habit and is widely used as a specimen plant, hedge, or foundation planting in warm climates. Starting at $14.95.

Active growing season.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade; full sun intensifies the burgundy foliage color on red-leafed cultivars, while partial shade is acceptable in NE Florida's summer. Avoid dense shade.
Water regularly until established; once rooted, loropetalum is moderately drought tolerant in NE Florida. Maintain consistent moisture during establishment and during drought to prevent leaf drop.
Grow in well-drained, acidic (pH 5.0–6.5) sandy or loamy soil; amend alkaline soils with sulfur. Apply an acid-forming slow-release shrub fertilizer in spring. Avoid 'Ruby' cultivar in Florida — other cultivars such as 'Plum Delight' and 'Sizzlin Pink' are more reliable performers.
