May lose some foliage in cold snaps.
Plant glossy abelia in full sun to light shade; in NE Florida's heat, full sun produces the densest growth and best flowering, while heavy shade causes thin, unattractive plants with poor bloom. At least 6 hours of direct sun daily is recommended.
Glossy abelia has good drought tolerance once established in NE Florida's sandy soils, but benefits from moderate, consistent moisture during establishment. After the first growing season, irrigation can be reduced; allow soil to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root issues.
Plant in moist, well-drained soil; abelia tolerates sandy and loamy soils common to NE Florida but dislikes prolonged wet feet. Amend heavy soils with organic matter at planting. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring; prune in early spring to stimulate new growth and heavy blooming.
