About Pothos
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is a vigorous tropical vine from the Solomon Islands, prized as a houseplant and shaded patio container plant for its heart-shaped, waxy leaves splashed with gold or white variegation. In NE Florida zone 9b it is not frost-hardy and must be grown in containers that can be moved indoors during cold weather. Note: it is invasive if introduced into outdoor tropical habitats. Outdoors in NE Florida it should be placed in sheltered shade or dappled light — direct outdoor sun will scorch leaves. Best suited as a houseplant or shaded patio container plant in zone 9b, as it is not frost-hardy.
Water when the top inch of soil is dry; Pothos tolerates occasional drought but performs best with consistent moderate moisture. In NE Florida's warm, humid summers growth is rapid — check soil moisture more frequently. Always use well-drained potting mix and never allow the plant to sit in water.
Use a well-drained, fertile potting mix for container culture. Fertilize monthly spring through summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength; reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter. In zone 9b, keep containers mobile so plants can be brought indoors when temperatures drop below 50°F.
