Prunus persica
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Peach (Prunus persica) is a deciduous stone fruit tree producing fragrant, velvety-skinned drupes with sweet white or yellow flesh. In NE Florida (zone 9b), success requires low-chill cultivars bred by the UF/IFAS program (100–300 chill hours) such as Tropic Snow or UFOne, and 'Flordaguard' rootstock to resist Florida's peach root-knot nematode. Starting at $135.00.
Bloom season. New foliage emerges. Good planting window.
Active growing season.
Foliage may begin to change or drop.
Dormant — drops foliage. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Peach requires full sun — a minimum of 8 hours per day — for optimal fruiting and disease resistance. In NE Florida, choose a well-ventilated site with full southern or western exposure to maximize chill-hour accumulation in winter.
Water regularly during establishment and throughout the growing season; deep, infrequent irrigation is best. Peach trees are highly sensitive to standing water — do not plant in areas that flood during Florida's rainy season. In NE Florida, drip irrigation prevents the foliar wetness that promotes fungal disease.
Plant in deep, well-drained, slightly acidic (pH 6.0–6.5) sandy loam. All peaches in Florida should be grafted to 'Flordaguard' nematode-resistant rootstock. Use a low-chill UF-bred cultivar (e.g., Tropic Snow, UFOne) for zone 9b. Fertilize three times per year (spring, early summer, early fall) with a balanced citrus/fruit tree fertilizer.
