Hydrangea paniculata
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) is a vigorous deciduous shrub from China and Japan bearing large cone-shaped panicles of white flowers that age to pink or rose in late summer and fall. It blooms on new wood and tolerates full sun in northern climates, but UF/IFAS rates it only to USDA zone 8A—it is not reliably suited to zone 9b NE Florida, where heat stress leads to poor performance. Starting at $34.95.
Panicle hydrangea requires protection from hot afternoon sun, especially in NE Florida zone 9b where summer heat exceeds its comfort zone. Provide morning sun only, with shade from noon onward. NOTE: UF/IFAS rates this species hardy only to zone 8A—it is marginal to poorly suited for zone 9b and may decline over time due to heat stress.
Keep soil consistently moist with regular irrigation; do not allow to dry out in Florida's heat. Mulch the root zone heavily to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature. Even with ideal care, this species is heat-stressed in zone 9b and is not recommended for NE Florida landscapes.
Grow in humus-rich, moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil amended with generous organic matter. Fertilize in early spring with an acidifying slow-release fertilizer. Consider replacing with the more heat-tolerant oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia), which is rated to zone 9b and thrives in NE Florida.
