Brazilian Plume (Justicia carnea) is a tropical shrubby perennial native to South America, bearing bold upright plumes of tubular pink to deep rose flowers above large, dark green, prominently veined leaves. Retains foliage through winter.
Brazilian Plume thrives in partial shade to filtered light; avoid full afternoon sun, which bleaches and stresses the foliage. It is an ideal NE Florida shade-garden shrub under trees or on a north- or east-facing planting bed.
Provide ample, consistent moisture — keep soil evenly moist but well-drained. In NE Florida's summer heat, Brazilian Plume wilts quickly when dry; mulch to conserve moisture and keep roots cool.
Grow in rich, well-drained soil amended with compost or peat. Feed with a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring and again in early summer to support vigorous foliage and heavy blooming.
