Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter.
Banana Shrub thrives in full sun to part shade; in NE Florida's intense summer heat, afternoon shade improves foliage color and flower longevity. At least 4–6 hours of direct sun is needed for good bloom production.
Water regularly to maintain evenly moist soil, especially during establishment (first 1–2 seasons). Once established, Banana Shrub tolerates brief dry spells but performs best with consistent moisture; avoid waterlogged conditions.
Plant in slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.5), fertile, well-drained loam or amended sandy soil. Apply a slow-release azalea/camellia-type fertilizer in spring and early summer to encourage lush growth and flowering.
