Lythrum alatum
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Winged Loosestrife (Lythrum alatum) is a Florida-native rhizomatous perennial with winged stems that thrives in wet meadows, pond edges, and rain gardens across NE Florida. It blooms from summer into fall with small six-petaled purple flowers, offering excellent value to native bees and butterflies in moist habitat gardens. Starting at $9.95.
Winged Loosestrife does best in full sun to light partial shade. In NE Florida, full sun in a wet or moist location — such as a pond margin, rain garden, or wet ditch — produces the most vigorous growth and flowering.
This is a wetland native that requires consistently moist to wet soil; it is not drought-tolerant. Site it at pond margins, in rain gardens, or in low spots that retain moisture. It is not suitable for typical well-drained landscape beds without supplemental irrigation.
Thrives in moist to wet loam, clay, or even sandy soils that stay consistently wet. No fertilizer is generally needed in naturally fertile wet sites; avoid dry, well-drained soils. In restoration plantings, organic matter incorporation improves establishment.
