Helianthus angustifolius
Fresh this week. Last restocked Apr 14.
A native Florida herbaceous perennial with narrow, rough dark green leaves and multi-branched stems that produce bright yellow daisy-like flowers with dark centers in fall. It forms spreading mounds and tolerates a wide range of moisture conditions, from dry upland sites to wet swales. Starting at $6.95.
Swamp Sunflower blooms best in full sun but tolerates part shade in NE Florida. In shadier spots expect taller, leggier growth with fewer flowers. Prune back hard in June to keep plants compact and well-branched before the fall bloom flush.
Tolerates a wide moisture range from periodically wet swales to average garden soils. In NE Florida sandy beds, water regularly until established; mature plants handle dry spells but produce more robust fall blooms with consistent moisture. Salt and flood tolerant.
Adaptable to sandy, loamy, or clay soils with average to high moisture. Little fertilizer is needed — a light application of balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring is sufficient. Divide clumps annually to maintain vigor and share with neighbors.
