Perilla frutescens
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Shiso (Perilla frutescens) is a fast-growing warm-season annual herb used in Asian cuisine, prized for its deeply colored, ruffled foliage in green or purple. In NE Florida zone 9b it grows vigorously through summer and readily self-seeds; note that it naturalizes easily and can become weedy if seed heads are not removed. Starting at $3.99.
Shiso thrives in full sun to part shade; in NE Florida's intense summer heat, afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch and extends the harvest window. Start transplants in spring after last frost risk.
Water moderately and consistently to keep soil evenly moist; shiso wilts quickly in Florida's heat. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Plant in well-drained, fertile loam amended with compost; target pH 5.8–6.5. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer at planting; shiso is a warm-season annual that bolts and sets seed in late summer.
