Cycas revoluta
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Cycas revoluta, sago palm, is a slow-growing cycad native to southern Japan and China with a stout, shaggy trunk topped by a symmetrical crown of stiff, dark green, feathery fronds. Despite the common name it is not a true palm but one of the most ancient plant lineages on Earth, widely used as a long-lived landscape specimen and container plant. Starting at $750.00.
Good planting window.
Handles summer heat well once established. Can be planted with extra attention to watering.
Growth slows as temperatures cool.
Retains foliage through winter. May need protection below 25°F.
Grows in full sun to partial shade; fronds are larger and more lush in shadier conditions. In NE Florida full sun positions are well tolerated but avoid reflected heat from pavement in dry sites.
Drought tolerant once established; water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry between irrigations. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline in Florida landscapes — ensure excellent drainage.
Plant in well-drained sandy or loamy soil. In Florida, apply a palm/cycad-specific granular fertilizer (containing manganese and potassium) three times per year to prevent nutritional deficiencies common on sandy soils; avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers.
