Primrose (Primula vulgaris) is a cool-season annual in NE Florida, grown for its colorful rosettes of delicate flowers in yellow, pink, white, and purple from winter into early spring. It thrives in mild weather and must be replaced when summer heat arrives; plant in November for best cool-season color. Starting at $6.95.

Bloom season. Retains foliage through winter.
In NE Florida, plant in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, or bright filtered light. Primrose performs best with some direct sun in our mild winters but must be protected from intense afternoon heat.
Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged; good drainage is essential to prevent root rot, especially during Florida's periodic winter rains. Water at the base of plants and keep foliage dry to reduce disease.
Amend sandy NE Florida soil generously with compost or peat to retain moisture. Apply a balanced low-phosphorus slow-release fertilizer at planting and monthly through the cool season; mulch with 2–3 inches of pine straw to conserve moisture and insulate roots.
