Digitalis hybrida
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Foxglove (Digitalis hybrida) is grown as a cool-season annual in NE Florida, producing tall spikes of tubular flowers in white, pink, purple, or rose from late winter through spring. Start transplants in November for February–April blooms; plants decline as summer heat arrives. All parts are highly toxic if ingested. Starting at $3.50.
Bloom season. Good planting window.
Higher water demand in summer heat.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter.
In NE Florida, plant in a location with morning sun and afternoon shade; full afternoon sun in winter can stress plants and shorten bloom. Part sun (4–6 hours) is ideal for this cool-season annual.
Keep soil consistently moist but well-drained; foxgloves are not drought-tolerant. Water at the base to reduce leaf disease risk. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot in Florida's sandy-clay soils.
Prefers slightly acidic (pH 6.0–6.5), organically rich, well-drained loam. Amend sandy NE Florida soil with compost before planting. Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks through the bloom season.
