Chamaedorea elegans
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans) is a slow-growing, shade-tolerant palm native to the rainforests of southern Mexico and Guatemala, commonly grown as a houseplant or sheltered patio container in NE Florida. It is cold-sensitive (hardy only to zones 10-12 outdoors) and must be protected from frost; best grown in containers that can be moved indoors during winter freezes. Starting at $19.95.
Bloom season. Good planting window.
Can be planted with extra attention to watering.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter. May need protection below 25°F.
Parlor palm requires bright indirect light to deep shade; never expose to direct sun outdoors, which causes severe leaf scorch. In NE Florida, grow in a sheltered, shaded patio spot or keep as a container plant moved indoors during freezes.
Water when the top inch of soil dries; avoid overwatering or waterlogged soil. Keep consistently moist but not wet — good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Use a rich, well-drained potting mix or loamy soil. Fertilize with slow-release palm fertilizer (8-2-12-4Mg) in spring and summer only — do not fertilize in fall or winter as new growth is cold-sensitive.
