Leucadendron
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 15.
Leucadendron is a genus of evergreen South African shrubs in the protea family, grown for their striking colorful bracts and cone-like seed heads. They require full sun, lean acidic sandy soil, low water, and superb drainage. In NE Florida's humid climate they are challenging long-term specimens — success depends on excellent air circulation, raised well-drained beds, and avoidance of all phosphorus fertilizers. Starting at $64.95.
Plant Leucadendron in full sun with maximum direct sunlight and excellent air circulation. In NE Florida's humid climate, airflow is critical — fungal diseases thrive where air is hot and still. Avoid crowding with other shrubs.
Leucadendron is drought-tolerant once established; water sparingly and allow the soil to dry between waterings. NE Florida's summer rains and high humidity pose the biggest risk: excellent drainage and raised planting beds are essential to prevent the root rot that kills these plants rapidly in wet soils.
Plant in very well-drained, sandy, acidic soil (pH 5.0–6.5) with low fertility; avoid phosphorus-rich fertilizers, which are toxic to Proteaceae. Do not amend with compost or apply standard landscape fertilizers — lean, infertile soil mimics the South African fynbos conditions this genus requires. In NE Florida, a raised bed with sharp-draining gritty soil gives the best chance of success.
