Lamium maculatum
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Spotted dead nettle (Lamium maculatum) is a low-growing European perennial groundcover with silver-splashed leaves and whorls of hooded pink, purple, or white flowers. It is hardy in USDA zones 3–8 and is marginal to unreliable in NE Florida's Zone 9b, where summer heat and humidity often cause mid-season dieback; it is best used as a cool-season annual or in a very sheltered, shaded site. Starting at $7.95.
Bloom season. Good planting window.
Bloom season.
Growth slows as temperatures cool.
May lose some foliage in cold snaps.
Grow in part shade to full shade; foliage scorches quickly in direct sun, especially during NE Florida's intense summer. Deep shade under deciduous trees or on a shaded north-facing exposure is ideal.
Keep soil evenly moist but well-drained; plants decline rapidly if allowed to dry out completely. In NE Florida's wet summers, ensure excellent drainage to prevent the crown rot that is common in heavy or waterlogged soils.
Plant in humus-rich, moist, well-drained loamy soil. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer lightly in early spring. Cut plants back hard in midsummer if they 'melt out' in the heat — this is a cool-season groundcover that performs best in NE Florida's fall through spring; it often struggles or dies back in the height of summer.
