Phlox subulata
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Creeping Phlox (Phlox subulata) is a mat-forming evergreen groundcover that explodes with dense sheets of pink, purple, white, or blue flowers in spring. In NE Florida (zone 9b), it is marginal — best in well-drained, elevated spots with afternoon shade and excellent air circulation; it does not tolerate Florida's combination of summer heat and humidity well. Starting at $9.95.
Creeping phlox performs best in full sun to part sun with afternoon shade in NE Florida's hot summers; too much shade reduces flowering, but full summer afternoon sun can scorch the mat.
Water regularly until established; once rooted, creeping phlox is relatively drought tolerant in well-drained soil. In NE Florida, avoid overhead irrigation to reduce fungal pressure in humid summers.
Requires sharp drainage — sandy or gravelly soils are ideal. Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer; avoid rich, moist soils that promote rot. Good air circulation is essential in Florida's humidity.
