Hedychium coronarium
Fresh this week. Last restocked Apr 20.
Butterfly Ginger (Hedychium coronarium) is a vigorous tropical perennial hardy to zone 8b, producing intensely fragrant white butterfly-shaped flowers on tall stems above bold, tropical foliage from summer through fall. In NE Florida it may die back to the ground after hard freezes but reliably resprouts from rhizomes each spring, forming impressive clumps near water features or moist garden borders. Starting at $24.95.
Grow in full sun to part shade; in NE Florida's intense summer heat, afternoon shade improves foliage appearance while plants in full sun produce the most fragrant flowers.
Keep soil consistently moist during the growing season — Butterfly Ginger naturally grows in flood plains and should never be allowed to fully dry out; mulch heavily to retain soil moisture in Florida's sandy soils.
Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained loamy soil; amend sandy Florida soils generously with compost and fertilize with a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring and midsummer to support vigorous rhizome growth and heavy flowering.
