Retains foliage through winter.
Grow areca palm in full sun to part shade. Young palms benefit from some afternoon shade until established; mature clumps thrive in full sun and perform best with 6+ hours of direct light daily.
Water regularly to maintain consistently moist, well-drained soil. Areca palms are not drought-tolerant and need supplemental irrigation during dry periods in NE Florida. Avoid standing water, which causes root rot and potassium deficiency.
Plant in fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Fertilize three times per year with a palm-specific slow-release fertilizer high in potassium and magnesium to prevent the common yellowing and frizzle-top deficiency symptoms seen in Florida.
