About ZZ Plant
ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is a glossy-leafed tropical perennial from eastern Africa, grown for its arching stems of dark green oval leaflets emerging from stout underground rhizomes that store water. Hardy outdoors in zone 9b (USDA zones 9b–11b) in frost-protected sites, it excels as a low-maintenance container or shade-garden plant in NE Florida — tolerating neglect, low light, and irregular watering better than nearly any other ornamental. ZZ plant thrives in bright indirect light to full shade — it is one of the most shade-tolerant plants available and performs well as a patio or covered-porch container plant in NE Florida; direct sun, especially in the intense Florida summer, will scorch the glossy leaflets.
Water
ZZ plant stores water in its thick underground rhizomes and is highly drought tolerant — water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering and waterlogged soil are the most common causes of failure; in NE Florida's humid climate, err heavily on the side of underwatering.
Soil & Fertilizer
Plant in any well-drained potting mix or amended loamy garden soil; ZZ plant will not tolerate wet feet, so excellent drainage is essential. Fertilize twice yearly (spring and summer) with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer; it is a slow grower and requires minimal nutrition.
