Dracaena trifasciata
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 15.
Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata) is a succulent perennial native to West Africa, recognized by its stiff, upright, sword-shaped leaves banded in shades of green, silver, and gold. One of the most durable and architectural houseplants available, it stores water in its thick leaves and adapts to a wide range of light conditions. Starting at $3.50.
Good planting window.
Handles summer heat well once established. Can be planted with extra attention to watering.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Thrives in low to bright indirect light indoors; can be grown in containers outdoors in shade or dappled light in NE Florida. Keep out of prolonged direct afternoon sun, which scorches the leaves. Best as a patio or interior container plant — do not plant in the ground outdoors in Florida, as it can spread aggressively (UF/IFAS advisory).
Allow soil to dry out almost completely between waterings; snake plant stores water in its thick leaves and is highly prone to root rot if kept wet. Water even less in winter or during cloudy periods.
Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Fertilize lightly once in spring and once in summer with a balanced slow-release fertilizer; do not fertilize in fall or winter.
