Strelitzia nicolai
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) is a massive, tree-like relative of the common Bird of Paradise, native to South Africa. It produces dramatic white and blue flowers from boat-shaped spathes and features large, banana-like leaves arranged in a fan pattern on tall trunks. Starting at $24.95.
White bird of paradise grows best in full sun in NE Florida but tolerates part shade; more sun promotes flowering. Provide a warm, sheltered microclimate to minimize freeze damage on cold nights.
Water regularly during the growing season; established plants have moderate drought tolerance. Reduce watering in winter. NE Florida's summer rainfall is usually adequate, but supplement during dry periods.
Plant in well-drained, fertile sandy or loamy soil. Feed with a palm or balanced slow-release fertilizer (3x/year in spring, summer, and fall) to support the vigorous growth and large leaf production characteristic of NE Florida culture.
