Pyrus communis
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
European pear (Pyrus communis) is not recommended for Northeast Florida zone 9b — it requires 600–800 chill hours that our climate cannot reliably provide. Low-chill hybrid cultivars such as 'Flordahome' or 'Hood', grafted on Pyrus calleryana rootstock, are the correct choice for NE Florida home fruit gardens. These hybrids produce clusters of white spring flowers and pear-shaped fruit in summer, with moderate fire blight resistance. Starting at $140.00.
Bloom season. New foliage emerges. Good planting window.
Active growing season.
Foliage may begin to change or drop.
Dormant — drops foliage. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Plant in full sun (minimum 6 hours direct sun daily) in a well-drained site. Full sun is essential for fruit set and tree health.
Water regularly during establishment; once established, deep-water during dry spells. Avoid waterlogging, which promotes root rot and fire blight.
Prefers well-drained sandy loam at pH 6.0–6.5. Apply a balanced fertilizer such as 6-6-6 or 8-8-8 (approx. 1.5 lbs per year of tree age, max 15 lbs) split between January and June; include magnesium and micronutrients. Avoid excess nitrogen, which increases fire blight susceptibility.
