Nemesia fruticans
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 15.
Nemesia (Nemesia fruticans) is a South African cool-season perennial that thrives in NE Florida as a fall-through-spring bloomer, producing two-lipped flowers in purple, pink, white, yellow, and bicolors. It fades in summer heat but can persist in zone 9b with afternoon shade and good drainage, making it ideal for borders and mixed container plantings. Starting at $6.95.
Bloom season. Good planting window.
Higher water demand in summer heat.
Bloom season.
Bloom season. Retains foliage through winter.
Plant Nemesia in full sun to part shade; in NE Florida's intense summer heat, afternoon shade extends the bloom period. A minimum of 4–6 hours of morning sun is ideal for prolific flowering.
Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged; Nemesia is sensitive to wet feet and can develop root rot in poorly drained soil. Water at the base of plants — avoid wetting foliage — and reduce watering if plants go semi-dormant during NE Florida's summer heat.
Grow in well-drained sandy or loamy soil amended with organic matter. Feed with a balanced slow-release fertilizer at planting and a light liquid fertilizer monthly during the cool growing season (October–April in NE Florida). Cut plants back by one-third if they stop blooming to stimulate rebloom.
