Brassica oleracea var. capitata
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) is a cool-season vegetable grown as a fall-through-winter annual in NE Florida. Plant transplants from September through November for heads ready to harvest December through March. Available in green, red, and savoy types, it thrives in full sun with consistent moisture and rich, amended soil. Starting at $3.50.
New foliage emerges.
Higher water demand in summer heat.
Foliage may begin to change or drop. Ideal planting window.
Dormant — drops foliage. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Requires full sun — a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In NE Florida, plant in fall (September–November) for a cool-season harvest; cabbage bolts and declines rapidly once warm spring temperatures arrive.
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Florida's sandy soils drain rapidly, so water 1–1.5 inches per week and mulch to retain moisture. Irregular watering can cause heads to crack at harvest.
Amend NE Florida's sandy soil with 3–4 inches of compost before planting. Fertilize at transplanting with a balanced vegetable fertilizer and repeat every 3 weeks. Cabbage is a heavy feeder; nitrogen is especially important for head development.
