Senecio cineraria
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 4.
Dusty Miller (Jacobaea maritima, syn. Senecio cineraria) is a Mediterranean subshrub prized for its deeply lobed, densely silver-felted foliage that provides luminous contrast in mixed beds and containers. In NE Florida it is grown as a cool-season annual, planted in fall for winter and spring display, and pairs beautifully with pansies, snapdragons, and other cool-weather annuals. Starting at $6.95.
Active growth period.
Handles summer heat well once established.
Ideal planting window.
Retains foliage through winter.
Grow Dusty Miller in full sun for the most vibrant silver foliage and compact habit. In NE Florida it is planted as a cool-season annual in fall; partial shade results in leggy, less attractive growth and increases fungal disease risk in humid conditions.
Water deeply at planting and during establishment, then allow the soil to dry between waterings — Dusty Miller is drought tolerant and prone to fungal stem rot and decline if kept too moist. Always water at the base and avoid wetting foliage in Florida's humid climate.
Plant in well-drained soil, including sandy Florida soils; good drainage is critical to prevent rot in high-humidity conditions. Apply a light dose of balanced slow-release fertilizer at planting; avoid heavy feeding, which promotes weak, floppy growth.
