Lithops
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Lithops (living stones) are tiny, stemless succulents from southern Africa, evolved to mimic pebbles in arid habitats. Daisy-like flowers emerge from the central fissure in fall. In NE Florida, grow strictly as an indoor container plant — outdoor humidity and rain are fatal; a south-facing window with excellent airflow is essential. Starting at $5.95.
Lithops require 4–5 hours of direct sun daily; in NE Florida, grow as an indoor plant on a south-facing windowsill. Outdoor humidity and rain are fatal — never plant in the ground or on unprotected patios in Florida.
Water extremely sparingly — once every 4–8 weeks in NE Florida's humid climate, and not at all during the summer dormancy period (May–August). NE Florida's ambient humidity may supply enough moisture; always let the medium dry completely before watering.
Use a mix of 90% inorganic material (perlite, pumice, or coarse grit) with minimal organic matter to ensure rapid drying. Do not fertilize; Lithops evolved in nutrient-poor soils and excess fertility causes splitting and rot. Grow indoors year-round in NE Florida.
Lithops is a succulent for Zone 9b coastal Florida gardens, reaching 0.5-1 inch × 1-3 inches.
