Neomarica caerulea
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 4.
A clumping rhizomatous perennial from Brazil forming dense upright clumps of sword-shaped, stiff dark green leaves, with branching flower stems bearing blue iris-like flowers 3-4 inches across adorned with intricately banded centers in yellow, white, and cinnamon. New plantlets form on arching flower stalks that root upon touching the ground. Starting at $16.95.
Giant Apostle's Iris grows in full sun to part shade; it tolerates more sun than commonly assumed when soil stays consistently moist. In NE Florida, a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade in summer prevents leaf scorch.
Prefers consistently moist, moisture-rich soil; water regularly, especially during dry spells. Established clumps in NE Florida handle brief drought but perform best with even moisture and mulched root zones.
Plant in moist, fertile loamy or sandy soil amended with compost. Fertilize lightly in spring and fall with a balanced slow-release fertilizer to support vigorous clumping growth in NE Florida's nutrient-poor sandy soils.
